Throughout our 50-year history in Europe, Dr Falk have always reinforced the importance of education, research and innovation in supporting the field of gastroenterology and hepatology.
Part of implementing the ‘Falk way’ in the UK meant establishing ways to carry these central tenets forward. This firstly included the educational Falk Forums, which were started to bring together specialists from around the UK to discuss the latest insights and research in GI and liver diseases, as well as other interesting initiatives.
Working with Core, a charity focused on fighting all diseases of the gut, liver and pancreas, the Dr Falk/Core Awards were launched in 2007. The objective from the outset was to not just support basic research in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology, but also the medical students and young doctors whose work makes future progress possible.
Support includes financial rewards in the form of bursaries and grants for young researchers whose work, being judged as outstanding, will hopefully lead to significant insights as they advance throughout their careers.
Since its founding, every year has seen encouraging numbers of applications with ever more exciting research questions. Based on the standard of each proceeding year, judges find themselves ever more eager to receive entries, and although this makes the process incredibly difficult, it also makes it considerably more rewarding.
